Ulysses
You almost seem to hear the sound of the waves in the progression of the song, in which the singer-songwriter’s extraordinary vocals are supported by an arrangement in which analog and digital sounds mingle to draw a mythological landscape: guitars, piano, bass, drums, djambé, shakers and synths, all orchestrated and played by The Niro.
The result is a song in which we are transported into the tale of a real journey, a metaphor for a personal journey. “Ulysses is closely related to The Birth,” the artist tells us, ” Where is the safe harbor in which to rest from the difficulties of life? I don’t know yet, but I would love to find it. Ulysses tells about that part of us that, despite fear, continues to travel. It is a piece that speaks of bewilderment, but also of hope. Writing it was my way of saying that even when we don’t see the harbor, life (the sea) can still teach us who we are.”
Bio The Niro
Davide Combusti, aka The Niro, has five unreleased albums to his credit, including three albums released by Universal: The Niro (2008), Best Wishes (2010) and 1969 (2014) while the 2012 album The Ship was released by Viceversa Records and distributed by Emi. Just 1969 differs from previous works in that it is entirely written and sung in Italian, like its title track presented in the Nuove proposte section of the 64th Sanremo Festival.
Many distinguished colleagues call The Niro to open their concerts. Among many Deep Purple, Amy Winehouse, Tom Hingley, leader of Inspiral Carpets and Lou Barlow of Dinosaur jr, Carmen Consoli, Isobel Campbell, Chris Leo, Gabriella Cilmi, One Republic, Afterhours, Caparezza, Malika Ayane. Also appreciated abroad, he performs mainly between France, Britain and the United States.
In 2019, The Niro is called upon by Gary Lucas to release ‘The Complete Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas Songbook,’ a critically acclaimed album containing the 12 tracks resulting from the collaboration of the two American artists, including five previously unreleased tracks. The album, which marks The Niro’s entry on the Esordisco label, is premiered at The Cutting Room in New York, and is entered in the five-team running for the 2020 Targhe Tenco in the ‘Best Interpreter Album’ section.
Recently, The Niro has begun illustrating his thoughts using the moniker “Illustrious Illustrations,” making use only of black and white markers on black cardstock. The Niro’s interpretation is freehand, instinctive and imperfect, but with a strong identity.
The Niro is among the actors in Il primo giorno della mia vita (The First Day of My Life), Paolo Genovese’s film, released in theaters Jan. 26, 2023.
The new album is released in May 2023 by Esordisco, anticipated by the title track Un mondo perfetto.“Replay,” track No. 8 on the album, enters the five-time Targhe Tenco nomination for “Best Song.”
June 2024 saw the release of “Summer,” a Mediterranean-colored track that photographs the exact moment when one turns away from a pain, forcing oneself to lightness and disillusionment.
The Italian and English versions of “Borderline” anticipate the new unreleased album, La Nascita, due out Friday, Nov. 14, through Esordisco.
